The Gardens of Remembrance pay tribute to:
- those who perished on September 11th, 2001
- the survivors of that day
- all who will visit in the years to come seeking renewed optimism and hope.
Renowned Dutch garden designer, Piet Oudolf, has designed these gardens, planted on May 8th, 2003, with native grasses and flowering perennials. They embrace the waterfront, are in rhythm with the sea breeze, and delight the eye, while greeting millions of visitors to The Battery each year.
Located at the southernmost tip of Manhattan, The Battery is one of New York City's oldest public open spaces. It is where Dutch settlers landed in 1623, and where the first 'battery' of cannons was erected to defend New Amsterdam.
